About BRAVE FESTIVAL

The artists of Sarpam Thullal group performed on 16th July 2014 at Brave Festival in Wroclaw, Poland. This ritual is devoted to the Serpent Gods and it is performed in Kerala, a state in South India. The ritual encompasses a possession of the performers.Sarpam Thullal is believed to be the oldest worship practice on the planet. It is said that the Serpent God possesses the power of fulfilling the dream of having a baby. Furthermore, it is also a votive offering to the Serpent God in order to gain family wealth and happiness. There are around 7 performers in this ritual: 3 Male (called Pulluvan) and 1 Female (called Pulluvathi) instrumentalists and vocalists, 2 Female Dancers and 1 Priest (who performs ritual offerings). They play Para (a crude drum), Elathalam (bell metal cymbals), Nanduni (a primitive type of veena, a stringed musical instrument) and Pulluvankudam (a primitive musical instrument consisting of an earthenware pot and strings) during this ritualistic performance. Brave Festival is an exceptional venture dedicated not only to extraordinary artistic events but also to people of great courage who use their art to speak up about themselves, their identity, spirituality, and origins. It presents vanishing, marginalized and displaced artistic traditions from all around the world, and is open to genuine models of living, thinking, creating in the world dominated by the culture of media and consumption.
