| Description |
Originating from beyond the seas from the captivating land of Arabia, the Maulud style of music literally means prayer in Arabic. Pre-dominantly sung by the people of the quaintly beautiful Kutch region, the Maulud style of singing is usually performed by a group of men sitting in a circle.
The Maulud genre of music is performed without the accompaniment of any musical instruments and the harmony rests solely on the melody of people singing this style. The Maulud genre has three distinct versions that are sung to celebrate the birth, wedding and death of the divine Prophet of God.
Conventionally the Maulud is sung during the night at festivities, weddings and social functions. On nights when the nomadic cattle herders meet under the starry skies of the vast grasslands or Rann of Kutch, they spend the entire night singing the Maulud way. Forming an important part of the Indian culture, the Maulud genre of music bears conspicuously divergent elements that sets it apart from all the other styles.
